Like a well-oiled machine, Notre Dame’s vaunted “Four Horseman” backfield dismantled opponents with ease, warranting sportswriter Grantland Rice’s apocalyptic billing. Together forever on the title page of this 1959 first edition book written by James A. Peterson, each member of Knute Rockne’s famed offensive quartet (Jim Crowley, Elmer Layden (d.1973), Don Miller (d.1979), Harry Stuhldreher (d.1965) has composed his coveted signature, along with notable additions Red Grange, Amos Alonzo Stagg (d. 1965), Pat O’Brien and the author James Peterson. The (8) signatures in blue pen average (“8-9”). The book does feature moderate to heavy peripheral wear (autos not affected) with solid content featuring the backfield whose three-year tenure (1922-1924) saw the Irish log an impressive 27-2-1 mark.
