We believe this handsome display piece to be the creation of noted illustrator J.R. Williams (1888-1957), who is best remembered for his long-running cartoon Out Our Way. Interestingly, the "J.R." copyright credit at lower right adds, "With apologies to C.D. Gibson," referring to Williams' contemporary, Charles Dana Gibson, of "Gibson girl" fame. Fresh off his win over Georges Carpentier, heavyweight champ Jack Dempsey strides powerfully through the crowd of admirers. A young newsie holding a "Dempsey Wins" paper says, "Gee! I'd rather be dat guy than de President uv de United States!" The large, 30 x 20-1/2" visible dimensions are apparent EX with scattered light wear and two original fold lines. Matted and framed to 37 x 27-1/2".
