A burgeoning star in Cincinnati before developing a rare condition and dying all too soon, Maurice Stokes is one of the most heartbreaking stories of the 1950s NBA; and one of the toughest of all basketball Hall of Famer autographs. Stokes (d.1970) signed this pair of items (light age appropriate wear) including: 1) March 25, 1954 letter signed on the bottom ("9-10") in blue pen; 2) Signed 2-1/2 x 3" photo ("7-8") with SFC 54 (Saint Francis) inscription. We can't recall seeing TWO Stokes autographs offered at the same time in any public auction! Auction LOA from JSA.

Letter reads:

Dear Dwight,

I am glad to know that you have chosen me to be included in your autograph collection. At that time I was without any snapshots of myself and that was the reason for the delay in my answer. Now that I received a few photo size snaps, I have autograph one for you. Thanks again for your letter and I hope that I will always be worthy of your scrap book.

Sincerely yours,

Maurice Stokes.
